I just got back from Cambodia and it was pretty amazing. Siam Reap's biggest draws are its ancient temples, Angkor Wat being the most famous of all. Le Meridien Angkor is the closest hotel to the famed temples and a quick and enjoyable 7 minute Tuk-Tuk (a motorbike drawn carriage) ride to the bustling town center.
The hotel stay was good one. The service, especially at the main restaurant, was really good. The staff spoke better English than I thought they would. It actually surprised me the number of people that spoke good English. It is definitely so because tourism is their proverbial rice bowl so they do have to be able to converse when needed. My room was cleaned well, and they turn down your bed and give you a pack of marshmallows at 5pm everyday.
The beds were soft and the bathroom spacious enough for 2-3 people to be doing different things at the same time. There were two things they were weak on: their pillows and their spa. They were just too fluffy, they refused to conform to the shape of my head. I usually sleep with 2 pillows, sometimes one; it depends but I find myself having to press my head down on the pillow and adjust several times.
The other weak link in this establishment was their spa. I check out the spa of every hotel I stay in because the point of a vacation is to recharge and refresh yourself and a spa is a good place to start. I initially booked 2 massages and a 60 minute facial. I went for my massage and my facial and I was throughly disappointed. The massage was weak and the facial was lame; I could have given myself similar results if not better at home! I canceled my other massage appointment there and then. I kinda felt like I had wasted 2 hours of my time.
Angkor Wat is a must visit monument; it's after all, one of the wonders of the world. Siam Reap is charming in its own right, and I find similarities to Ho Chin Minh City. There isn't much to do because after the 2nd day, I was completely T.O-ed (Templed-out). There were many of them and after a while, the stories behind the carving became similar and so did the structures.
But that being said, Siam Reap is a great place to go chill for a weekend and I would recommend staying at the Le Meridien Angkor.
