Shiseido 'Pureness' Matifying Moisturizer Believe me when I say I have tried lots of products. Especially products that claim to mattify and control sebum production. Some work, most don't. I don't know if it's just me or if I am an exception because my skin is exceptionally oily. The good news is, it will take longer for me to get lines and wrinkles and the bad news is, people automatically get distracted by the shine on my face. The people who know me well will tell me but the ones who don't will just stay quiet and stare. It's sort of like an itch you want to scratch except that it's yours to scratch.

I've been using this for a few weeks now and I have to say that I am quite surprised by how effective it is at controlling shine at surface levels. I remember the first time I used this and noticing that 4 hours later, my skin still looked matt and the usual facial spread of oil was less severe.

It's got a creamy texture and after application, your skin looks a little moist for a minute or so and then it looks matt and stays like that for a while (how long, it all depends on your skin type).

With oil absorbing powder that aids in reducing excess shine while providing essential hydration so you don't get the tight, uncomfortable feeling. The skin's natural moisture balance is protected with Shiseido's Hydro-Balancing Complex that regulates and maintains the pH-balance of your skin.

I felt refreshed and properly moisturized after every application. Which is exactly what you want from every moisturizer.

Peter Thomas Roth Soothing Repair Ointment
As tough as my skin is (it takes peeling treatments and retinoids very well), I sometimes find it begging for some relief. I don't abuse my skin but microdermabrasion and laser treatments leave red patches that go off within a few hours or the next day.

But what do you do in-between those few hours? I usually find myself having to go for dinner and drinks hours after I leave the dermatologist's. I don't know if it's just bad timing or coincidence - but that means I have to deal with calming my skin down and reducing the obvious post treatment irritations.

I use this handy ointment to calm my skin down. Its light yet enriching texture will help calm and soothe cuts, burns and all post-treatment irritations. I like how multi-tasking this is; use this on your body or face. It makes a great traveling companion.

With ingredients such as Arnica that is clinically proven to reduce bruising and swelling, Lidocaine with Aloe Vera to comfort and reduce irritation and Vitamin E to heal and protect; this is one useful and effective ointment.

My post-treatment irritations fade and disappear faster and my skin feels better quicker - this is a beauty cabinet staple.

Dermalogica Solar Defense Oil Free Matte Block SPF20
I only started using SPF products a couple of years back. In my teens, I never bothered about sun protection and age spots and pre-mature aging. All I wanted was a deep tan and a glow. Yeah, I know, stupid. But you live and you learn. And I did.

I remember when I first started out using sunblock daily, I would use whatever I used at the beach or the pool and within 1 hour of stepping out of the house, my skin would grease up like a deep fryer at Mc Donalds'. I was at a loss and I didn't know what to do about my extremely oily skin. I combed the shelves to no avail (I didn't really know where to go look for products) all while wishing someone would make a product for oily skin that provided sun protection while inhibiting oil production.

Turns out someone actually did just that. I was doing some product shopping when I came across this from Dermalogica. I immediately bought it and I couldn't wait to give it a shot.

This lightweight lotion goes on easily without mess or white patches you get with some sun products. The wonderful Microsponge technology works, as its name suggests, like a sponge to soak up oil production leaving your skin matte longer all while providing sun protection to the tune of SPF 20.

The other great thing I like about this is how it contains Green Tea extracts to help soothe inflammation caused by breakouts or the occasional zits. My skin looked shine-free for a few hours longer than usual which is something I am very pleased about.

You use this as your daily moisturizer or alternatively, you can use this on top of your SPF- free moisturizer to give your skin an essential shield from the sun. Its lightweight, oil-free formula ensures you get the protection you need without clogging your pores.

Lancome Blanc Expert NeuroWhite X3 Ultimate Whitening Hydrating Emulsion
I have a new obssession - dark spots and uneven skin tone. I get the occasional zits and before they vanish and disappear, they always leave their mark and a parting gift in the form of really obvious brown spots (from melanin that is produced during times of stress and inflammation) The zits come and go in a matter of days but the spots stay on for longer.

I love spending time in the sun and even with protection, my skin bears the brunt of it and it shows via uneven patches. I am actively trying to cut back on my time spent in the sun but I will keep hanging out by the pool for as long as I can.

It was then that I decided to look into whitening products. Now, the term 'whitening' is very much a marketing tool - no product can physically alter your skin shade or turn it white. What whitening products do is increase cell renewal rate, encourage exfoliation and target melanin production at the source - all these help to remove dulling dead skin cells, promote fresh skin growth and fade those dark spots which in turn, result in radiant, even, fairer skin.

My first foray into whitening products resulted in the purchase of this moisturizer from Lancome and a spot treatment cream (stay tuned for that review - coming shortly). The light texture glides on to instantly soften my skin while providing hydration courtesy of Glycerol. Gentle exfoliants from Beeck Buds Extracts work to remove dead skin cells and increase new cell growth.

The targeted whitening system in this moisturizer works to deeply reduce melanin production and reduce current and new dark spots. My spots did become lighter and my skin was well hydrated and more even-toned after a week of daily use. This is a great moisturizer for use throughout the day - I especially like using this before a night of partying. My skin looks radiant and coupled with my tan - my skin looks healthy, bright, with a glow (so I am told).

Just a note, this doesn't contain SPF so you're supposed to use sunblock when you use this during the day. And if you need another incentive, this is currently on sale at 50% off! Clinique Repairwear Intensive Night CreamAfter my success with Clinique's Total Turnaround Visible Skin Renewer, I was eager to give this night cream a more thorough whirl. I've used this before here and there but never really dived into it until a couple of weeks ago when I picked up a jar at the store.

I was looking for something richer; something that would help reverse the harmful effects of my time spent in the sun and also hydrate the drier parts of my skin continuously.

My skin was instantly hydrated from this rich cream which helped eased the discomfort around the flaky, dried-out area over my chin. This cream is packed with vitamins and antioxidants to help stimulate new cell growth and boost skin's natural repair cycle. My skin looked brighter, became softer and despite those nights when I don't get enough sleep, I still woke up with healthy looking skin.

This would be a good moisturizer for the drier and colder parts of the year and would serve very well those of you who sleep with the A/C on at night; which makes it perfect for year-round travel.

Get this for US$48.50 (1.07oz/30ml) at Sephora.

Clinique 'Total Turnaround' Visible Skin RenewerOne of my closest pals asked me to bring a bunch of stuff back home for him (because I had the huge suitcase) while we were vacationing in Bali and this moisturizer was among one of the few items. He told me to feel free to use it and I am very glad I did.

From the first application, I noticed a difference. My skin was brighter, smoother and looked better. I was throughly impressed. This cream is like a mini-exfoliator of sorts, by rushing fresh new cells to the surface and in the process, improving your complexion. My skin looked more refined and even toned after a week of daily usage.

The light, grainy texture goes on smoothly and doesn't dry out or cause breakouts. Use this after your daily moisturizer. It's not just me who noticed a difference. On the second day I used this product, I was told I was glowing twice and both parties demanded to know what I was using.

Now this is a keeper and I don't want to give it back! Get this for US$36 (1.7oz/50ml) at Nordstrom.

Avene Clean-AcContrary to popular belief, oily skin has its dry and flaky moments too just like any other skin type. Harsh soap, dry climate and acne treatments are just some of the contributing factors that dehydrate skin.

I recently had to deal with a sudden breakout arising from stress and sudden climate change and my treatment plan left my skin tight, uncomfortable and flaky. I found this at the Avene counter at the drugstore and I jumped on it. I am a fan of Avene products and I was so throughly impressed with this.

This moisturizer is specially formulated to help your skin deal with dry and harsh acne treatments. With a very high concentration of Avene thermal spring water, this goes and glides on smoothly to rehydrate and balance blemish-prone skin. You can feel the effect instantly and it worked after just one application.

The best thing about this, is that it is lightweight enough to be used on top of your regular acne treatment moisturizer. Use it day/night whenever your skin needs a boost of moisture. My flaky skin stopped peeling and the tightness was gone. Just like that.

A must have for every acne treatment program. Get this for US$16 (1.35oz/40ml) at Drugstore.com.

Clarins Hydra Quench Cream

Vacations do come with their own stress and these stresses can manifest themselves into zits that will require stronger, dryer potions which in turn add to the dryness of your skin winter. I had to deal with this while in Italy along with flaking and tightness that just took its own sweet time to get better.

This cream turned out to a real skin-saver. My parched, flaky skin immediately became hydrated and with regular use, softer and healthier. Gone was the tightness and the discomfort.

With potent extracts of peanut oil to restore the hydrolipidic layer, hyarulonic acid to increase moisture retention and alfafa to stimulate collagen production while firming and regenerating.

Slap this on day and night or anything your skin needs an extra boost of moisture. A great travel companion.

Get this for US$48 (1.70z/50ml) at Sephora.

Clarins Multi-Active Day CreamPlane rides and winters can cause even the oiliest skin to dry up and fake. This was what happened during the past 2.5 weeks in Italy. My skin was dehydrated and looking tired. I picked this up at the airport and it really came in handy.

The light texture goes on smoothly, easily and doesn't leave you with a sticky feeling which is a good quality because I tend to slap on another layer of moisturizer during the winter months and having my pores clogged is not something else I need to deal with.

With extracts of sugar cane to regulate moisture, shea butter to lock in moisture, ginseng to stimulate and refresh, olive and chestnut tree to nourish; this cream will ensure day long comfort.

The time release formula gives you protection from pre-mature aging day long. My skin felt better within the first two applications and looked better within days. This is also good for night use when you need another layer of protective care.

Get this for US$66.50 at Strawberry.Net.

Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins Mineral-Enriched Moisture CreamI enjoy the sun and the beach; maybe a little too much. But I always slap on at least SPF 15 and reapply whenever necessary. That said, it still doesn't change the fact that my skin gets a bashing after my week of sun and alcohol.

I bought this night cream a few weeks ago and I have been using this religiously. It glides on easily and smoothly while instantly replenishing dry skin. This is most suitable for dry and combination skin but I always need extra hydration after sun worshiping so this works.

Its vitamin rich formula of B-complex, C, E and A, minerals and exfoliating agents work hard when you sleep to repair and renew your skin. With regular use, my skin tone became more even and I woke up with brighter, smoother skin.

My skin felt less dehydrated and it didn't look like I got bullied by the sun's ray. The light fresh, soothing scent is a bonus and a nice treat before bed.

Biotherm Homme T-Pur Intense Extra-Matifying Moisturizing Fresh GelI've been on the lookout for a moisturizer that would be great for a night on the town. One that didn't clash with my anti-shine serums and one that would keep my skin matt and reduce shine for hours. I have really oily skin and my T-zone can get distracting after a while.

This is the strongest anti-regreasing moisturizer that Biotherm has. I've been using Biotherm products ever since I was 16 so I was quite eager to try this one out.

It glides on smoothly and easily; while mattifying your skin in seconds. Despite its harsh sounding name, this moisturizer actually keeps your skin hydrated while regulating shine. Because your skin produces more oil to compensate for dryness.

It's got a blotter texture so you can be assured a less shiny complexion. Your pores are refined and skin is purified by natural fruit acids which help exfoliate and remove dead skin cells.

I liked this so much, I went back to the store to get another bottle so that I have extra just in case.

Shiseido Men Moisturizing Recovery Cream
Stress, travel, partying and the general lack of sleep has been wrecking havoc on my skin and I've been breaking out like it was puberty all over again. That part of puberty is not something I desire to relive. However, you got to do the best you can and I started war on my zits - I won but the dry, flaky, parched skin that was a result of my zit-removing regime was uncomfortable and unsightly.

I just finished a jar of this moisturizer from Shiseido and it took my dehydrated skin and showered it with moisture and protected it from external aggressions. This fresh smelling moisturizer absorbs quickly to treat rough, damaged skin. My skin felt softer, smoother and gone was the tightness that bothered me.

The flaking of my skin stopped after 2 days and I had improved texture. This handy moisturizer will also help protect your skin against the damage from daily shaving. Its 24 hours surge of moisture helps to protect against fine lines caused by dryness. This day/night moisturizer contains Thiotaurine to help balance oil production; hence making it perfect for all skin types.

The Body Shop Vitamin C Plus Time Release CapsulesThis is my travel staple that I take along every time I need to be on a plane for more than 5 hours. Its convenient, individually sealed capsules makes it very travel-friendly and you can just pack 1 one capsule for everyday of your vacation in a zip-loc bag or a pill case.

It delivers fresh Vitamin C that protects and boosts the radiance of your skin while Vitamin E neutralizes free radicals and slow down the effects of environmental stresses. Its unique time-released systems ensures a more effective absorption by your skin.

I pop open one capsule and I apply it before the start of a long flight; my skin stays hydrated and I look fresher when I land. I still need to use my trusty Avene spritz on the flight but not as often and there is a noticeable reduction in the dryness of my skin.

This is also great for taking along to beach/summer vacations - the ones that you spend days lying in the sun (with protection, of course). Place them in the hotel fridge and pop one before bed to help reverse the effects of sun worshiping.

With extracts of Brazil nut oil and black currant seed oil to moisturize and soften skin, this nifty little single-dose capsule gave me healthier, brighter skin and a more even skin tone. It comes in a bottle of 28 capsules - one for each day of your skin's renewing cycle.

You can also use this before an important date or when your skin needs a little boost. Gotta love something so useful, cheap (it is only $1 for one capsule!) and compact!

Get this for $28 (28 capsules) at The Body Shop.

RoC Dermatologic PURIF-AC™ Blemish Correcting EmulsionMy week of sun-worshiping in Bali gave me a great, deep tan but also a couple of zits. They were threatening to keep conquering and I needed to do something. I ran out of blemish control moisturizers (I have different moisturizers for different purposes) and I was glad I found this at the store.

I've been using this for 2 weeks now and said zits are gone. This moisturizer has a thicker texture than I was expecting but it went on easy. My skin looked instantly matt and with regular use, those pesky blackheads on my nose were reduced in number.

Salicylic Acid, zinc, copper and natural ingredients like cinnamon, cedar work together for effective action on those imperfections we can all do without.

I also liked this because it helped regulate sebum production and decreased the usual redness associated with zits. It also kept my skin moist throughout the day which was quite important because I zip in and out of air conditioned rooms everyday so I needed something that would help take care of those extra spots without over-drying.

Get this for US$21 (1.35oz/40ml) at eSkinStore.

Kiehl's Facial Fuel spf I don't sleep well all the time and I am sure I am not alone. Given the current economic blip, the high price of gas that is affecting everything from food to flight prices, a deteriorating eco-system and my favorite Olsen being subpoenaed (I'm kidding but Mary-Kate is my favorite Olsen, for the record); it's no wonder why I sometimes have difficulty falling asleep.

For days after such nights, it shows up as the occasional outbreak, puffy eyes and dull, tired skin. I found this facial fuel last year and have been using this on days after sleepless nights.

It's got a light, silky texture and barely any fragrance. It contains extracts of Vitamin C (increases cell turnover process), E (ubiquitous antioxidant ingredients), Chestnut (helps retains and restore lipids) and Soy that work together to improve the overall look and texture of your skin. This moisturizer helps accelerate skin's recovery to better deal with external environmental aggressions.

With regular use, my skin looks brighter and I look a little more alert. My skin also feels smoother. I also use this whenever I know I will be running around completing errands; it helps deal with the effects of pollution and smog.

There are two versions of this; one with SPF and one without. The added SPF 15 makes this a useful day moisturizer (the difference in price is only US$4).

Get this at Keihl's for US$24.50 (2.5 oz/74ml).

Lancome Bienfait Multi-Vital Glow SPF 15 I've been on the market for a day moisturizer that will provide sun protection, moisturize and give me a light tan at the same time. I know I can easily go get a self-tanner with SPF but I am not a fan of the smell that a lot of self tanner have and I find I look like I just finished a 12 hour shift in the kitchen at IHOP's whenever I use them so I was quite glad when I discovered this.

This vitamin enriched, non-comedogenic moisturizer will pack in essential moisture, shield you from harmful UVA/UVB rays and give you a natural subtle glow all at the same time. With 2.5% DHA (the ingredient that causes your skin to adopt a temporary tan), you don't have to worry about looking too fake or turning orange. This moisturizer provides 24 hour hydration while potent vitamins, minerals and fatty acids work together to enhance the condition of your skin. Broad spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 15 ensures you get 15 times more protection from the sun. Moringa Tree Extract and Vitamin E+CG helps protects against free radicals and environmental damage.

It goes on smoothly and absorbs into the skin easily and I don't look like I've spent the whole morning frying sunny-side ups!

Origins Plantidote Mega-Mushroom Face Cream & Serum Origins Plantidote Mega-Mushroom Serum

I am a fan of the beach and the sun; a huge subscriber to the mantra of lying the sun all day and doing absolutely nothing. During my days of working on the perfect tan, I found I got more than I bargained for. I hit my daily quota of Vitamin D and I was rewarded with premature fine lines around my eyes, mouth and cheeks. I panicked, headed to the store and grabbed a set of these from Origins. They turned out to be a real skin saver.

With extracts of Hypsizygus Ulmarius and Chaga mushrooms that help send signals to the skin to optimize its defenses against environmental damage resulting in youthful, healthier, stronger skin. This patented formula is further enchanced by Menyanthus and Heather extracts to firm skin, Fucoidan from Okinawan seaweed to seal in moisture and Vitamin E and C to eradicate harmful free radicals.

The lines were gone in a week and I had brighter, clearer skin. The first thing that hits you is the smell, as the name suggests, it smells a bit like mushroom. It's by no mean punganat; more light and stew-y. At least I knew it was authentic, imagine if you bought this mushroom serum/cream and went home and discovered it smelled like lavender or cirtus. How cheated will you feel?

Use the lightweight serum after your daily toner and then the face cream as part of your skin regime. Get the Mega-mushroom face cream for US$60 (1.7oz/50ml) at Bloomingdale's and the serum is US$65 (1.7oz/50ml) and US$110 (3.4oz/100ml) also at Bloomingdale's. You can also head to the nearest Origins counter in your state or country.

The Body Shop Vitamin E Nourishing Night CreamI picked this up at The Body Shop store 2 years ago when my skin was dehydrating from the multitude of acne products that I was using. I had discoloration, cracked and patchy skin that was acting up. It was not a good sight. I went home, applied this, went to bed and hoped for the best.

I woke up the next morning with visibly improved skin. It was still a long way off from the ideal skin condition but it was a start. My sun-damaged, acne-product ridden skin looked better after continuous use.

It might be a night cream but the texture is quite light compared to other night creams. Packed with Vitamin E to fight free radicals and protect the skin from environmental stresses, Glycerin to effectively provide essential moisture, Cocoa Butter to soften skin while restoring suppleness; this inexpensive night cream helps repair and soften while you sleep. Get this at any Body Shop store or online for US$18 (1.7oz/50ml).

Biotherm Biopur Matifying Fluid SPF 15

I've got very oily skin and huge pores; thanks in part to my years of baking in the sun without protection. I'd like to think I've smartened up now and have started using products with sunscreen. Given my skin type, slapping on sunscreen would mean looking as if I could fry 2 sunny side-ups after about an hour. I found this last week and I dig how it moisturizes, refines my pores, regulate sebum production and offer protection from those UV rays. It's got extracts of white clay and silica to combat sebum; giving your skin a matte finish while providing hydration. Get it at any Biotherm counter.
