Maison Martin Margiela 10 - Square Neck Sweater
Maison Martin Margiela 10 - Square Neck Sweater back
Sweaters - like V-neck ones, are one of the essential pieces in a wardrobe. Like white shirts, sweaters go with most everything and will serve you round all year round.

If you're a little tired of the classic V-neck design and want something different but yet clean and sophisticated at the same time, then my vote is for this square neck piece.

The square neck gives this a modern touch that will look great worn over a shirt or on its own. The lightweight wool and soft cotton blend makes this perfect for all year round wear. The grey shade is a classic standard and will never go out of style or look out of place.

I remember my first Sony Walkman - I got it when I was 9 and I thought it was the bomb and I would take it everywhere. Of course, I had to carry around 5 different tapes for variety but I remembered thinking that it was all so cool. It was cool until the film of my tapes got tangled and jumbled, then it was just game over for me. I was good at fast-forwarding and back-tracking to specific songs and I did it so much that I worn out all my tapes. Gosh, how did we ever cope without the repeat function?

R.E.M frontman, Michael Stipe, who also happened to write several soundtracks of my youth, played designer for Maison Martin Margiela. The result is a highly versatile, cassette-tape inspired piece. It can be worn or used according to your mood - on your wrist one day, tied to your boots the next, worn as a necklace or used to hold your keys. Plenty of possibilities.

This cool, limited-edition piece (only 199 made) comes with a handmade notebook individually numbered and personally signed by Michael Stipe. I'll go all the way to Reno for one of this......

Margiela In Name Only
Rumors of Martin Margiela stepping down from his namesake brand has been floating around for months. It is no longer a rumor but a truth. Maison Martin Margiela is no longer directly involved in the designing of his brand - this is confirmed by Renzo Rosso; founder of Diesel who in 2002 bought a majority share in Maison Martin Margiela.

This is beyond sad. Martin Margiela is a visionary at the forefront of his craft. I never fail to be amazed and thrilled by his pieces. I don't know if the Maison Martin Margiela brand is going to mean as much now that Margiela himself has stepped down. It wouldn't be the same and only time will tell if the new team can fill the huge gapping void that his departure would cause.

It's time to start hunting for pieces designed by Margiela himself - they are going to increase in value faster than you can say 'In Name Only'.

Martin Margiela Zip Trim Coin Purse
Martin Margiela Zip Trim Coin Purse back
I usually throw my coins around or change them all into notes. I am not a big fan of coins and I try to get rid of them as often as I can. Or I just keep them in the coin pocket on my jeans but unfortunately, some of my jeans have only 4 pockets and I skip carrying change all together then.

That said, I know a lot of people who carry around coin pouches and they seem to have that part of their life in order. Maybe I should take a note out of their book. This coin purse from Maison Margiela caught my eye and I am liking clean, sleek lines and zipper detail.

The multiple zipper detail is done right and with the black contrast zip - there is a zing to this purse. And the sole zipper on the back means you can reach your coins with ease from all direction.

The white is pristine and it's not a good idea for someone clumsy like me but I know a few people who would appreciate this. Get this Martin Margiela Zip Trim Coin Purse for US$160.87 at Diabro.
Maison Martin Margiela book
Maison Martin Margiela is coming to a book store near you. Set to be released sometime next month, this starched white muslin book will contain shots of his illusive career. With contributions from fashion luminaries such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Carine Roitfeld, this book will also showcase Maison Margiela's forward-moving and often avant garde exhibitions.

With his furniture line and now this book, Maison Margiela is slowly but surely making his way not just to your wardrobe but your book-shelf and your home. That works for me - I could always use more Margiela in my life.

Maison Martin Margiela Glazed Leather Wallet inside
I travel quite often - monthly to be specific and dashing through airports, hotels and apartments can be more fun if I have my things in order. I throw them all in my trusty laptop bag and I've had it for years and it's been everywhere with me. So it's always stuffed and I am always digging through it which isn't very productive if the customs officer is tapping his knuckles on the immigration desk.

This long wallet will come in handy. I can store my cards, cash, flight printouts, coupons etc. I love the vintage strap elastic closure. It reminds of those notebooks back in the day where they were tied together.

The glazed sheen of this wallet adds to the charm of this piece and it's one of those leather pieces that will look better with age. It's spacious enough to allow you to chuck your passport in which makes this even more useful.

I am a huge fan of Maison Martin Margiela's work. He's a visionary and very forward. I admire his aesthetic and sense of individualism.

That said, however, there are some pieces of his that make me scratch my head. Like this one. I dig its sci-fi vibe and influence but it's just unwearable. And I don't think it's flattering at all - no matter how great your features are.

It's too wide and it's too tall and unless you're really blessed with chiseled, angular features - this won't be feasible at all. Really cool but just not as wearable. Or maybe I am just not cool enough for this but I prefer to think the former than the latter....

Martin Margiela Double Breasted Topcoat Barneys mailer

Martin Margiela Double Breasted Topcoat
Martin Margiela Double Breasted Topcoat detail
I have a thing for colder weather so much so that I head to somewhere cold and snowing every December. I like dressing up and there are clothing options that only cold weather can permit and wearing a gorgeous topcoat is one of them.

This silk distressed satin topcoat is luxourious and oh-so-cool. Seen in the Barneys' mailer, this double breasted coat has the edge and sheen that speaks volume. I like the simple 2 buttons that make up this double-breasted piece. No chunky, clunky extra buttons that no one is ever going to use. Just simple and clean - button up and go.

The welt pocket at the chest means a platform for expression with a silk scarf or hankerchief. With a tuxedo feel, this stunner will get you through dinners, winters and then some more for years to come.

Maison Martin Margiela M Tee
Diesel Black Gold Tybult White T-Shirt
KON Lines Tee
(From Top: Martin Margiela M Tee (Fall 08), Diesel Black Gold Tybult Tee, KON Lines Tee)

It is common knowledge that the ever-elusive Maison Margiela is a visionary and a trend-setter whose pieces, genius as they are, mostly befuddle casual observers. And unlike the works of other high-profile designers, Maison Margiela's works rarely trickle down to the mainstream high-street stores.

I was surfing around just the other day when I came across two pieces by Diesel Black Gold and KON; and immediately, they struck me as familiar - I know I have seen them somewhere before. After 3 seconds, it hit me that they look like the M Tee Maison Margiela released in the Fall of 2008.

Look at them - The Diesel piece has an uncanny resemblance but looking way inferior with its printed-paint tape design and the KON piece looking sleeker than the Diesel tee with red thrown in for good measure and contrast.

I don't stand for the blatant rip-off that high street stores often are guilty of but I also understand the difference of cost between the original source and the diluted, watered-down version. It's a personal choice of mine but I always go to the source because the quality, the workmanship and the crux of the idea resonates strongest from the source.

That said, I do applaud KON for taking an idea and putting their own spin on it - red contrast, similar sheen and more tape. In this case, you can actually have your cake and eat it too - have a thought-provoking design at a wallet-friendly price. So if you want a Margiela influenced piece, skin the cheap looking Diesel and go straight for the KON one (it's cheaper too!)

You can find the Diesel Black Gold Tee for US$65 US$26 at SSense and the KON Line Tee for US$24 at Urban Oufitters
Martin Margiela Small Discoball Wallet

Martin Margiela Small Discoball Wallet
I love the 80s - especially the music and occasionally the experimental dress sense. What I think of the 80s, I think of disco-balls and shiny, shimmery objects. I know here at Style Flavors, I am always talking about classic pieces and ones that will give you plenty of mileage years and years after you bought them.

But I am also about fun and this wallet is pure fun. It could go both way - this disco influenced subject but in the hands of Maison Martin Margiela, you get a functional, eye-catching and relevant piece. A lot of disco pieces go down the path of kitschy but this isn't one of them.

I like the small individual squares of plastic - they give just the right amount of shimmer without over-killing it. The useful snap button closure is great too - helps keep the flaps of the wallet together so you can better appreciate the fun detail on this wallet.

Available in both large and small versions - US$345.96 and US$296.30 respectively at Oki-Ni.
Maison Martin Margiela Leather Cardholder

Maison Martin Margiela Leather Cardholder inside
I have been thinking of replacing my YSL Muse card case periodically for a while now. It's not something I think about at all - it just comes and goes whenever I see or come across card cases. So when I saw this, it got me thinking again.

I am really digging this cardholder. I love its simple yet classic design - of an envelope. It's cute yet effortlessly cool at the same time. And another thing I love is its larger-than-average width. So you can actually store more.

The popper fastening ensure easy access to your belongings and erases the need for a wallet when you're heading out. Just pop your ID, credit cards and name cards and you're good to go.

Available in black and grey - my favorite colors! Get this for US$212.68 at Browns

Maison Martin Margiela Laser-Cut Shirt Maison Martin Margiela Laser-Cut Shirt bib Maison Martin Margiela Laser-Cut Shirt detailI love statement shirts. Ones that would hold their own and attract attention from those in the know and from those who feel like they need to always need to say something. Sure sometimes it gets annoying but it's great to know that a mere clothing article can command such buzz.

I am digging this wonderful piece from Maison Margiela. The front bib looks classic and edgy at the same time, thanks to the laser-cut detailing of the fabric panels that give a 3D look that will surely stand out in a sea of white shirts.

This would be a forward piece to wear to a formal black tie event where you display subtly the hit of detail on this shirt. I am loving the fresh and modern vibe from this otherwise simple shirt. Dress this down or up; either way, this would make a stylish addition to any wardrobe.

Maison Martin Margiela Mirror Placket Shirt Maison Martin Margiela Mirror Placket Shirt placket Maison Martin Margiela Mirror Placket Shirt detailI am not a fan of loud, garish details neither do I fancy sequins, beads or anything shiny that just screams for attention. Yet, I am very drawn to this shirt by the designer of cool, Maison Martin Margiela.

The unique black, mirror tile embellishments stand out with just the right amount of attention grabbing detail. However, instead of rudely shocking the people around you with the bling, the mirror detail on the placket draws eyes to your shirt in a quieter fashion - like a good conversation starter.

The black cotton shirt makes for a easy ensemble; with jeans, tailored pants or as part of a suit. A sure fire way to stylize an outfit. This would be perfect for a night on the town or a house party or when you simply just want your shirt to do all the talking.

Maison Martin Margiela Zipped Leather Jacket Maison Martin Margiela Zipped Leather Jacket detail Maison Martin Margiela Zipped Leather Jacket backI wrote about this wonderful jacket last July, and even tried it on in the store a couple of times (they, sadly, didn't have my size left) and it looks like Mr Margiela decided to release it again in a fresher shade of grey (still loving grey!) and with slight improvements.

This light grey will look stunning with most solid colors and I am loving the new, improved banded collar that adds a dash of detail to this already cool jacket. The two slanted zip compartments with double zippers (another subtle detail worth loving) open to two slot pockets for easy access to your daily necessities.

The zip closure at each cuffs provides a rocker-chic vibe when left unzipped that will resonate and add an edge to whatever you're wearing. This classic piece doesn't come cheap but it will be a good, solid investment.

Maison Martin Margiela Maison Martin Margiela

Maison Martin Margiela I've come to the conclusion that I need more tees; besides my regular American Apparel ones (which I love). Tees that are more dressed-up, unique and can hold their own in a social event or occasions one notch above casual.

This tee is calling out to me and I won't refuse. The stand-out factor is of course, the band of fabric that is connected to the patch pocket and runs through the back of the tee. It's not a in-your-face detail but a more layered and softer one and would, I can imagine, spark some curiosity.

There is also options in the way the band of fabric is slung - you can also have it wrap around the back for a relaxed hoop look. I appreicate the black option - I love black because I am a pretty clumsy person so with this, I don't have to think twice about food splatters or drink spills. The grey is stunning too and will provide an even greater contrast to the black band.

This is definitely going onto my Spring wishlist. Get the black version for US$245 at eLUXURY and the grey one at Aloha Rag.

Martin Margiela Two Fold Antiqued Long Wallet Martin Margiela Two Fold Antiqued Long Wallet sideThere are certain things that look better beaten up and carried with a 'devil-may-care' attitude. Like Converse Chucks and combat boots for example. You can also add this wallet to the list.

I was thinking about wallet replacement and doing my usual round of work when I came across this. I am still very much into grey and this distressed leather (with deliberate dirt stains and smudge) piece gives off its very own cool, individualistic vibe. The zip coin compartment makes for handy access to your loose change or spare key.

What I like best is how compact it looks and the fact that you don't have to worry about dirtying this because that will only add to the charm of this wallet.

Maison Martin Margiela Pinstripe Shirt Maison Martin Margiela Pinstripe Shirt back

I love stripes; on shirts, tees or sweaters. Especially when they are of the right color. This Margiela piece is just that.

The black and white stripes are on their own, simple, but the switch in the stripes on the back of the shirt provide an element of surprise. A good, sleek one.

This is growing on me the more I look at it. Wear it with pants or jeans; this will look great both ways.

Maison Martin Margiela Short Trench Coat

Maison Martin Margiela Short Trench Coat backClassics like a crisp white shirt or a well-fitted blazer never go out of style and seasons after seasons, designers try to reinterpret and put fresh spins on these classics. Sometimes, they fail but other times, they succeed and make you want to take a closer look.

This short trench from Martin Margiela did just that for me. It stayed true to the classic shape and vibe while proudly displaying its modern tone. The shorter length would be perfect for those who want the look of a trench without the weight. This great coat gives a casual, chilled-out vibe when worn unbuttoned and would hit all the right notes on a cool, summer night. Simply button it up for a more dressed-up look when the mood/occasion hits and you're good to go.

The fabric gives off a subtle sheen while the ventilated back provides a useful outlet for freshness. I am digging the belted bands along the hem and cuffs - they add a dash of cool detail that won't go unnoticed.

This would be a fantastic addition to your 2009 wardrobe and it can be found at eLUXURY for US$1545.

Martin Margiela Two-Way Messenger Martin Margiela Two-Way Messenger back

I hate clutter and I dislike unnecessary things. Therefore, I take immense pleasure in throwing things out, setting aside individual piles (to donate and to throw) and clearing out space. That said, I still always find myself carrying lots of stuff everyday - from notes, to books, to products to shopping hauls.

A handsome messenger like this one is just what I need to get me through everyday. I am loving the deep brown shade of the calf leather - it would never go out of style and will look even better with age (when taken good care of).

This simple yet detailed filled bag will provide ample storage space to take you from work to the gym to after-meeting proposals. The flap closure with tab-snap fastening provides an easy way to reach your essentials while the outer pocket gives you the freedom to store bits and pieces of your daily life.

The carry handle and adjustable shoulder strap gives you the flexibility to hand carry (while allowing others to marvel at the subtle, cool dart stitching detail on the back) or sling. This is big enough for your laptop and would make a stylish accompaniment when you travel!

Maison Martin Margiela Snap Wallet Open Maison Martin Margiela Snap Wallet closed

Unique pieces that will stand the test of time and still remain edgy are hard to come by. But this wallet from Maison Martin Margiela will do both. This post is for one of my oldest and closest pal, Bryan.

Bryan, I think this could be the wallet for you! Its got cool gold metal stud details that hold the two flaps together. It might take some time to get used to having snap open and close whenever you need to pay for something but I think the design would worth it.

With fine top-stitching and cracked leather, this would look better with age. And helping get a bang for your buck is what friends do for each other!

Martin Margiela Felt Epaulette Jacket Martin Margiela Felt Epaulette Jacket backA sharp, fitted, detail oriented jacket can easily jazz up a lazy Fall day ensemble. It'll take you through both dress down and up days seamlessly.

Look at how cool and beautiful this Margiela piece is. Its arched flap pockets provide a unique origami detail while maintaining its function (it is big and deep enough to store your daily essentials).

The button paneling on the back of a poorly constructed jacket would lead to puffiness and an unflattering bloated-ness. However, on this jacket, it only serves to increase the sleek aesthetic as do its side zip and buttoned cuffs.

You can wear this year after year and it will still look relevant and fresh and at the end of the day, don't we all want such mileage out of everything we own?

Martin Margiela Folded I have been on the look-out for stylish, functional, everyday belts to call mine for a while now but I haven't had much luck. Hence my comfortable refusal to budge out of my no-belt phase.

This belt from Martin Margiela might just have what it takes to get me out of my slump. I am digging the subtle 'M' detail on the belt front; it is quiet and understated; just what I need.

The rich cognac color will look smart with black pants/jeans while the sheepskin leather will age gracefully if taken care of. Ensuring years of use and compliments.

Maison Martin Margiela Banded Sunglasses, Bronze Maison Martin Margiela Banded Sunglasses, Bronze 1This is just like something you would see out of a sci-fi movie or on Battlestar Galactica. I've only seen a couple of episodes but I think this would fit right into their whole wardrobe theme.

This is also, of course, classic Maison Margiela. He, of the black band around his models' eyes of past seasons. He took that concept and brought it to everyday life with this pair of bronze shades.

The thing is, I am on the fence on this one. On one hand, it's got the whole cool Fifth-Element factor and it is smartly constructed because there is a little nose nook that I couldn't see from the first picture but is visible in the second; so it is actually comfortable to wear for more than a few minutes. And you'll be sure to be the only one in the block or the whole neighborhood with shades like these.

On the other hand, I am not too thrilled with the dull bronze color - maybe it was a direct opposition to the whole sci-fi vibe? I think silver or black would be a better fit in terms of color but maybe this was Maison Margiela's whole point. To have something so obviously inspired by a certain theme but then not look like everything one would associate with that theme.

So if you ever feel like fast-forwarding a few light years, you can find this for US$545 at eLUXURY.

Martin Margiela Evening Scarf Martin Margiela Evening Scarf 1 I am digging this silk twill narrow scarf from Maison Martin Margiela. As its name suggests, this is perfect for those nights on the town where you wine and dine in style. The silk fabric gives a luxurious sheen while being soft to the touch.

It wouldn't do much to keep you warm during those winter nights but the lightness of the fabric will allow you to layer it on and in turn provide an opportunity to play with color. This is also available in Purple. Get this for US$125 at Barney's.

Maison Martin Margiela Utility Pocket Jacket front Maison Martin Margiela jacket belt

Maison Martin Margiela is seriously giving me lustbumps. His Fall 08 collection is wearable, inspired, cool and modern. I cannot wait to go check out the whole collection in Paris.

For now, there is the world wide web. This useful pocket jacket will not only keep you warm and stylish, I am quite sure you can keep skip the day bag and live out of this jacket. With 4 generous sized pockets and two interior pockets (one with button-and-loop closure), you don't have to worry about losing your daily essentials. There is space for passports, wallets, hand cream, lip balm, maps, keys, coupons, condoms and oh, even lube! (As long as it's not Costco-sized, everything that I have mentioned will fit into this great jacket).

The thing I dig the most about this jacket is the adjustable waist belt which adds shape and contour that is usually not highlighted in men's fashion. You can also wear this without the belt for easier removal (if you're shopping or on your way to a tryst) but I would, personally, make sure that belt stays on everytime I wear this. The adjustable belt details is also present on the collar which only adds to the uniqueness that is often associated with Maison Martin's designs.

This 100% Polyurethane jacket is going for US$1395 at eLUXURY.

Martin Margiela Zipped Pocket Leather Jacket Martin Margiela Zipped Pocket Leather Jacket 2

This rocking leather jacket from Martin Margiela is giving me lustbumps. They are like goosebumps but instead of being triggered during fear or cold, they get released when I see an item such as this. Lust and want combined into a potent emotional concoction. You heard it here first.

Coming back to this, I am digging the twin front zipped pockets on this jacket and the two zippers on the start and end of the individual zipper. They are still pockets so you get functionality as well as edge. The soft premium grey leather adds a sleek, devil-may-care debonair to the whole look. Mr Margiela has also thrown in 2 zippers at the cuff to complete the look. I can't wait to go try this on. Get this for US$1,903.85 at Diabro.

Maison Martin Margiela Zigzag Pinstripe ScarfMaison Martin Margiela Zigzag Pinstripe Scarf 2

This skinny zigzag scarf from Maison Martin Margiela will add a dash of fun to your ensemble. Pair this with your favorite tee and go about your day. The zigzag pinstripes remind me of the comics I used to read where a fight scene was represented with a big POW! or BAM! in a big zigzag or lightening bolt. The black fringe at the end sums up the relaxed, playful vibe from this scarf. Get this for US$145 at eLUXURY.

Martin Margiela Dress Pants 2Martin Margiela Dress Pants 1

These straight leg dress pants from Martin Margiela were made to fit like a glove; with their waist boning. Boning refers to a piece of material (flexible metal etc) inserted under the fabric to hold the clothing in place and to keep it from riding up. The complimentary V slit on the waist band adds a unique twist, along with its 3 pocket design. It's on sale at YOOX for US$190 in multiple sizes.

Maison Martin Margiela Two-Tone Formal Shoe 2Maison Martin Margiela Two-Tone Formal Shoe 1

This pair looks like a hybrid between something you'll wear with a tux and something you'll wear with flair shorts. Thanks in part to its 0.5" heel. I especially like the contrasting leather overlay. It doesn't look very formal like its name suggests but it gets extra points for being versatile enough to be worn with shorts, jeans and pants. Now that's a bang for your buck!
